Before any phone call, run the checks for your symptom. They're free, they're safe, and they solve a real share of "broken AC" nights on their own.
Blowing warm air
The most common Florida complaint, and the one with the most free fixes. Work through these before anyone charges you a diagnostic fee.

Check the thermostat is on COOL and set 3–4 degrees below room temperature
A surprising share of "broken AC" calls end here — especially after a power blink resets the schedule.

Look at the breaker panel for a tripped AC breaker
Flip it fully OFF, then ON, once. If it trips again, stop — repeated resets can damage the compressor.

Pull the air filter and hold it up to a light
Can't see light through it? A clogged filter chokes airflow until the system cools nothing.

Walk outside and check whether the outdoor unit fan is spinning
Indoor fan running but outdoor unit silent usually points to a capacitor or contactor — a common, inexpensive repair.
Leaking water
Water around the indoor unit is almost always the condensate drain, not refrigerant — and in Florida the drain line clogs with algae faster than anywhere north of us.

Turn the system off at the thermostat first
Every hour it keeps running adds water to whatever is already soaking your ceiling or closet floor.

Check the drain pan under the air handler
A full pan with a clear drain means the float switch failed; a full pan with a slimy drain line means an algae clog.

Look for a white PVC pipe outside dripping near the slab
If it hasn't dripped in days during cooling season, the line is blocked upstream.
Ice on the pipes or unit
Ice means low airflow or low refrigerant. Either way, running it makes it worse — thaw first, diagnose second.

Switch cooling OFF but set the fan to ON
The fan thaws the coil in a couple of hours without the compressor fighting a block of ice.

Replace the filter while it thaws
A choked filter is the number-one cause of a frozen evaporator coil — and the only one you can fix yourself.

If it freezes again within a day or two, book a leak check
Recurring ice with a clean filter usually means a refrigerant leak, and topping off without fixing the leak just rents you a few cool weeks.
Strange noises
Noises are a language: each sound points at a different part. The trick is matching what you hear before it becomes what you pay.

Buzzing from the outdoor unit that won't start
Classic failing capacitor — cheap part, common Florida summer casualty.

Grinding or metal-on-metal
Shut it down. Motor bearings are finishing themselves off, and running it turns a motor swap into a bigger bill.

Rattling that changes when you press on the panel
Often just a loose panel screw or debris in the cabinet — the free kind of fix.

Blower belt or motor bearing on its way out; schedule it, but no need to panic tonight.
Completely dead
Nothing on the thermostat, no fan, no hum. Dead systems are usually electrical — and half the time it's not the AC itself.
