Heating and cooling in Tampa, FL: it's one machine, and it's a heat pump

One email when we open. No spam, unsubscribe anytime.

Almost nobody in Tampa Bay has a furnace. Every January a few hundred homeowners discover this while searching for "furnace repair" and pointing at a heat pump. Heating here means a heat pump — the same outdoor unit that cools you in August, running in reverse — usually with electric strip heat as backup for the coldest mornings. Understanding that one arrangement answers most Florida heating questions, including why your vents feel cooler than a furnace and why your January power bill occasionally triples.

Heating services

What's in this section

  • Heating repair — heat pumps, strip heat, and what actually fails
  • Heat pump maintenance — covered in the annual AC tune-up, because it's the same machine
  • Heat pump replacement — see AC replacement; the decision is identical

We're not going to invent separate pages for services that are the same visit. Your heat pump doesn't have a heating identity and a cooling identity. It's one system that runs both ways.

The three arrangements you'll find in Tampa Bay homes

SystemHow it heatsWhat to expect
Heat pumpReverses the refrigeration cycle, moves heat indoorsEfficient at Florida temperatures; air feels gently warm, not hot
Heat pump + electric strip heatHeat pump does the work; resistance coils assist on the coldest morningsStrips are expensive to run — a stuck strip heater shows up as a shocking bill
Electric furnace / air handler with heatResistance heating onlySimple, reliable, costly per hour

Gas exists here, but it's uncommon. Check the data plate before assuming you have a furnace.

Normal things that worry people every winter

Cold air from the outdoor unit in January. Normal — in heating mode the outdoor coil is the cold one. Steam rising off the outdoor unit. Normal — that's a defrost cycle. Air that feels cooler than a furnace's. Expected — heat pumps deliver more air, gently warmed, rather than less air, very hot. Burning dust smell on the first cold night. Usually summer dust burning off the heat strips. It should clear within a cycle or two. Hot plastic or electrical smell is different — shut it off.

The January bill

The most common "my heating is broken" call in Florida isn't a breakdown. It's a power bill two or three times normal, and it's usually electric strip heat doing the entire job because the heat pump isn't engaging — or a thermostat left on Emergency Heat and never switched back.

Check that setting before you call anyone. It costs nothing and it's the answer more often than it should be.

Heating and cooling are one HVAC service here, not two

This is the part that saves Tampa homeowners money, so it's worth stating plainly: in a heat pump home, heating service and air conditioning service are the same visit on the same HVAC system. There is no separate furnace to service. Any heating and cooling company that sells you two annual visits for one machine is selling you a second trip.

What a proper annual HVAC service visit covers, in both modes:

  • Refrigerant charge verified in cooling and in heating — most technicians check only one
  • Reversing valve operation confirmed, which is what makes the AC system run backwards in January
  • A defrost cycle initiated and watched from start to finish
  • Strip heater sequencing and amp draw measured
  • Temperature rise across the air handler compared against the equipment's specification
  • Thermostat confirmed as configured for a heat pump rather than for a furnace
  • The same electrical, drain and airflow checks that any air conditioning repair or maintenance visit includes

If you already have an AC maintenance plan, heating is inside it. That's how it should be.

Heat pump installation and replacement in Tampa, FL

When a heat pump reaches the end of its life, the installation decision is the same one as for air conditioning, because it is the same equipment. Size by the cooling load, choose the coil material deliberately, set the air handler level, protect the electronics, and have someone verify airflow rather than assume it.

Two Florida-specific notes on heat pump installation:

  • Don't oversize "for winter." Tampa, FL has a handful of genuinely cold nights. Oversizing to cover them costs you humidity control for the other nine months.
  • Strip heat sizing matters more than people think. Too little and cold mornings feel miserable; too much and a single stuck sequencer produces a power bill that looks like a typo.

Our AC installation and AC replacement pages cover the equipment decision in full, because for a heat pump there is nothing separate to decide.

Sizing for Florida, not for Michigan

Heating equipment here is sized by the cooling load, because cooling is what the house needs for nine months. An oversized system chosen "for winter comfort" will short-cycle for three quarters of the year, never dehumidify properly, and leave you with a house that's cold and clammy in July. The handful of genuinely cold nights are handled by strip heat, which is exactly what it's there for.

A note from people who have done this for a while

The Sunny City Cooling team has more than 60 years of combined field experience in Florida, and heating is the part of the job that produces the fewest surprises and the most phone calls. The equipment is fine. The thermostat is on Emergency Heat. We will still come out and check — but we'd rather you looked first and kept the money.

Heating in Tampa Bay: your questions, answered

What's the best heating system for Florida?

A correctly sized heat pump, for nearly every home. Fuel-burning heat is hard to justify for the number of cold nights Tampa Bay actually gets.

Why is my heat pump blowing cold air?

Either a normal defrost cycle, lasting a few minutes, or the heat pump isn't engaging. Beyond ten minutes of cold air, it's a service call.

Do I need separate heating and cooling maintenance in Tampa, FL?

No. It's one HVAC system and one annual service visit that covers both modes — as long as the technician actually tests heating operation rather than only cooling.

Why did my January power bill triple?

Most often strip heat running as the primary source, or a thermostat left on Emergency Heat.

Is a heat pump enough for a Florida winter?

Yes. Heat pumps stay efficient well below the temperatures this region reaches, and strip heat covers the rest.

Should I repair or replace a 12-year-old heat pump?

Depends on the part — reversing valve or compressor at that age argues for replacement, controls and motors usually don't. The replacement page has the four questions to work through.
