# Heating repair in Tampa, FL: it's almost always the heat pump, not a furnace

Most Tampa Bay homes don't have a furnace. They have a heat pump — the same outdoor unit that cools you in August runs backwards in January and heats you. That one fact explains nearly every heating question we get here, including the two that worry people most: the outdoor unit blowing cold air in winter, and the smell of burning dust the first cold night of the year.

## Florida heating, honestly

Tampa Bay gets a handful of genuinely cold nights a year. Equipment here is sized for cooling and heats as a secondary duty. Three arrangements cover almost every home:

- **Heat pump** — most common. Moves heat in both directions. Highly efficient down to the temperatures Florida actually reaches.
- **Heat pump with electric strip heat** — the heat pump does the work, resistance coils in the air handler assist on the coldest mornings. Strips are expensive to run, which is why a stuck strip heater shows up as a shocking power bill.
- **Electric furnace / air handler with heat** — straightforward resistance heating. Simple, not cheap to run.

Gas furnaces exist here, but they're the exception. If you're searching for "furnace repair," check the data plate first — there's a good chance you own a heat pump.

## The normal things that scare people

**The outdoor unit is blowing cold air in winter.** Normal. In heating mode the roles reverse: the outdoor coil is now the cold one. It's supposed to feel like that.

**The outdoor unit is steaming.** Also normal. That's a defrost cycle clearing frost from the outdoor coil. It runs a few minutes and ends.

**The air from the vents feels cooler than a gas furnace's.** Expected. Heat pumps deliver a larger volume of gently warm air rather than a small volume of hot air. It heats the room perfectly well; it just doesn't feel dramatic.

**A burning-dust smell on the first cold night.** Usually the dust that settled on the heat strips all summer, burning off. It should clear within a cycle or two. If it doesn't, or if it smells like hot plastic or electrical burning, shut it off.

## The problems that are real

The expensive item on that list is the reversing valve, and it's worth a second opinion when one is diagnosed — particularly on a system already past ten years, where it becomes part of a larger repair-or-replace conversation.

## The bill that arrives after the cold snap

The single most common "my heating is broken" call in Florida isn't a breakdown at all. It's a January power bill two or three times normal.

Usually that's strip heat doing the whole job because the heat pump isn't engaging — or a thermostat set to "Emergency Heat" back in December and never set back. Check that switch before you call anyone. It costs nothing and it's a surprisingly frequent answer. Our team's combined 60-plus years in the field have produced exactly one rule about January service calls: look at the thermostat first, then the breaker, then call.

## Heating repair, air conditioning repair — same HVAC system, same technician

In a heat pump home, heating repair and air conditioning repair are the same trade on the same equipment. The technician who diagnoses why your [AC won't cool](/services/air-conditioning/ac-repair/) in July is diagnosing the same compressor, the same refrigerant circuit and the same air handler that fails to heat you in January. The only additional parts in the heating path are the reversing valve, the defrost control and the electric strip heaters.

This has three practical consequences for a Tampa homeowner:
