# Why your AC is blowing warm air, and what to check first

If your AC is blowing warm air, start with three things in this order: the thermostat is set to COOL and not FAN ON, the air filter isn't choked, and the outdoor unit is actually running. Those three account for a large share of warm-air calls, and all three are free to check. If the outdoor unit is spinning, the filter is clean and the air is still warm, you're most likely low on refrigerant — and that's a leak, not a top-up.

Everyone's first reaction is the same one. You put your hand over a vent, feel room-temperature air, and go set the thermostat two degrees lower, as if the machine needs encouragement. It doesn't. Neither does turning it off and on again, though we understand the impulse — it works on everything else. An air conditioner is either removing heat from your house or it isn't.

## What "blowing warm air" actually means

Your AC doesn't make cold. It moves heat. Warm indoor air passes over the cold evaporator coil inside; the refrigerant in that coil absorbs the heat and carries it outside, where the condenser dumps it into your back yard and the fan blows it away.

Warm air at the vents means that chain is broken somewhere — either no heat is being absorbed inside, or it isn't being released outside. Working out which end is the problem is most of the diagnosis.

## Check these first — five minutes, no tools

**1. Thermostat set to COOL, fan set to AUTO.** With the fan switch on ON instead of AUTO, the blower runs constantly, including between cooling cycles. Room-temperature air comes out of the vents and people conclude the AC has failed. Set it to AUTO and see what happens over the next twenty minutes.

**2. The air filter.** Hold it up to a light. If light doesn't pass through, airflow across the evaporator coil has dropped, the coil can ice over, and an iced coil blows warm air. In Florida, a filter that was fine six weeks ago can be finished now.

### 3. Is the outdoor unit running?

Go stand next to it. You should hear the compressor and see the fan spinning. If the indoor blower runs but the outdoor unit is silent, you've narrowed the problem to the outdoor side: a tripped breaker, a failed capacitor, a contactor, or the safety switch on the disconnect box.

### 4. Is anything blocking the outdoor unit?

Grass clippings, a hedge grown in close, a pool cover leaned against it for the summer. The condenser has to breathe. Give it two feet of clear space on every side.

### 5. Are the vents and returns open?

Closed bedroom vents and a return blocked by a sofa both starve the system. This is the least glamorous cause on the list and it's real.

## If all that checks out, you're probably low on refrigerant

Refrigerant is not fuel. It doesn't get used up. A system that is low on refrigerant is leaking, and that changes what you should expect from anybody who comes to look at it.

Symptoms that point this way: air that's cool-ish but never cold, a system that runs continuously and never satisfies the thermostat, frost on the copper lines at the outdoor unit, and a power bill that jumped without a change in habits.

## Where the leaks actually come from — a field view

Manufacturers compete on price through material thickness — how thick the copper is, or whether they use aluminium instead. In the cheaper units the condenser and evaporator are essentially all aluminium. Aluminium doesn't take the thermal load the way copper does. It develops microcracks, especially when it's poorly insulated and sitting in direct Florida sun. Refrigerant leaks out of those microcracks, and the leak is genuinely hard to find — it's not one hole, it's a weeping seam. Systems like that live about seven years under normal conditions.

## The sprinkler problem nobody mentions at the sale

With more than 60 years of combined field experience on the team, this is the finding our owner would put on a billboard if billboards were cheaper.

> People plant beautifully around the condenser and run irrigation right at it. The water here is hard. When sprinkler water hits the condenser day after day, even copper starts to degrade and crack. I always recommend it, and I check it on every install: make sure the sprinklers don't spray the unit. Keep it as dry as you can.

Five minutes with your irrigation controller, done once, is worth more to that unit than any add-on anyone will try to sell you. Go outside during a watering cycle and watch where the spray lands.

Work down the table before spending money. Most warm-air calls resolve in the first two rows, and both of those you can troubleshoot yourself in ten minutes.

## When the AC blows warm only at certain times

**Warm in the afternoon, fine at night.** The system is marginal — undersized, low on charge, or fighting attic ducts that are baking at 130°F. **Warm after a power flicker.** Some systems need a few minutes before the compressor restarts, by design. Give it fifteen. If it still won't start, check the breaker.

**Warm in one or two rooms only.** That's a duct or a balance problem, not a cooling problem. The machine is fine; the air isn't arriving.

## Why the air feels cool but the house never gets there

There's a state between "working" and "broken" that confuses people: the air conditioning is producing noticeably cool air, the AC unit runs almost constantly, and the house still sits three degrees above the setpoint.

That pattern has three usual explanations. A slow refrigerant leak, which lowers capacity without stopping the system. A condenser coil so dirty it can't release heat outdoors — common where sprinklers have been scaling it for years. Or a duct system losing a third of the cool air into a 130°F attic before it reaches a room.

All three produce the same complaint and none of them produces a dramatic failure, which is why they run for months. The tell is your power bill: a system working this hard to under-deliver is expensive to run, and the bill notices before you do.

## What you should not do

Don't buy a can of refrigerant online and put it in yourself. Home-use kits for automotive systems are not the same refrigerant, the charge has to be weighed rather than guessed, and overcharging a system damages the compressor — the single most expensive part in the box.

Don't pour water on the outdoor coil to "help it." If you want it clean, rinse it gently with the power off, from the inside out, and accept that hard water is part of the problem in the first place.

## When to have someone look at it
